Australian artist Ziggy Alberts took to the stage last night (27/09/2018) to play a sold out show at London’s Scala, his biggest European headline event to date. It was the last night of his tour but it seemed like he had more energy than anyone in the venue and performed at the top of his game.
The atmospheric acoustic sounds of Harrison Storm opened the show where he performed a selection of original songs that took to the crowd very well. Storm was a perfectly fitting support act with a similar sound and style that everyone instantly loved.
9:15pm and Alberts walked on stage to huge cheers from the crowd standing in the packed out venue. It’s fantastic to see the response of so many people watching a guy singing his songs halfway around the world with nothing more than a guitar and a kick drum.
There were new songs and old to keep everyone dancing on their feet. Laps Around The Sun and Love Me Now were stand out tracks that will feature on his new album out next month. His soothing vocals were the centre of attention and his relaxed blend of acoustic-pop was incredibly warming throughout.
Alberts is often likened to artists such as Ben Howard, James Bay and Hozier, but I think I would add Bon Iver to that list too. His well known tracks like Runaway, Days in the Sun and Gone (The Pocahontas Song) brought endless amounts of joy to Scala. Constantly interacting with the sold out crowd and making sure that everyone was involved, Alberts showed just how possible it is to stand out as a truly independent solo artist.
It wasn’t just his music either, storytelling was a strong focus throughout the set, taking his beloved fans behind the songs and sharing highlights from what he calls “almost a world tour.” Introducing his latest single Stronger, which is out today (28/09/2018), Alberts expressed how excited he was for the new album and that he wanted to unveil one more track before the full record comes out.
Overall, it was a fantastic performance from one of the finest singer/songwriters around. His new album Laps Around The Sun is out on his own record on the 9th November and we’re pretty sure that it will bring him even more success.
