Carousel have just finished their first UK headline tour which included dates in Cambridge, Exeter, London, Manchester and their hometown of Southend. They also unveiled a brand new single entitled Firesong and if you read our review of their Chinnerys show on the 28th September, you will already know that it’s a fantastic song.

Firesong follows the upbeat summer anthem Don’t Let It Die, which we recently shared a live session video for. It’s their first stripped back, slow-tempo release for 2018 and what a stunning track it is. Their warming harmonies shine in all of their glory and the truly wonderful instrumentation will take you to a different place altogether.

As with all Carousel releases, Firesong was recorded by Peter Waterman from Longcroft Recording – he always captures their sound perfectly. Mixed at SS2 by Rees Broomfield, the bands sound is becoming instantly recognisable, no matter what they put out.

Firesong is about friendship, honesty and mental health in equal measure. As much as it comes across in an empowering way musically, many will find the lyrics highly relatable. Carousel explain more about Firesong below:

“Firesong first appears to be a jovial song about being with friends around a campfire, sharing stories and good times. Beneath the surface lies an undercurrent that exposes the stigma within mental health and how hard it can be to tell someone that despite how things may appear, that you are not okay. We wrote this song to encourage our friends and family to speak up and to be open and honest about how they are feeling. That there is no shame in experiencing depression or anxiety.”

There’s a reason why Carousel are becoming one of our favourite bands and its songs like this that reminds us why. Firesong doesn’t pack a punch like My Father’s Son and Don’t Let It Die, but it does prove that they are true songwriters.

If a band can make a crowd go wild for one moment and then bring them to silence in the next, that’s when you know how good they are – Carousel are really that good.
