There’s just something special about James Gillespie, a rising singer-songwriter born in England but raised in Scotland. P!NK saw that something special in James and plucked him as a support act on tour and after listening to his latest single ‘Hold Me Down’ it’s easy to see why.
In recent years we’ve seen a wide variety of male singer songwriters with a growl in their voice such as Rag N Bone Man and Tom Walker yet Gillespie brings something slightly different to the table. He segues seamlessly between delicately crafted, lightly sang verses and emotionally powerful choruses that allow his voice to reach another level. One thing that impressed me the most with ‘Hold Me Down’ though is that Gillespie doesn’t stick to a formula, the production in terms of a ballad is experimental with flickering synths, distorted backing vocals and rumbling percussion sitting quietly beneath Gillespie’s incredible vocals, one never overpowering the other. I haven’t even touched upon the lyrical themes of the single which utilise picturesque metaphors to plant a love story inside your mind.
James Gillespie is set to release his debut album ‘Safe’ imminently on October 18th and going from his latest single is set to be an unmissable Fall release, perfect for those cold Winter nights.
